God and Gospel

The Gospel (the true story of the perfect life, substitutionary death, burial, resurrection, and reign of Jesus) is the power of God for salvation (Justification: As if I've never sinned/as if I've always obeyed. Sanctification: Transforming me to be used by God. Adoption: New family. New Father. Redemption: Brought into a right and real relationship with God. Glorification: I will be made never-ending new).

This is what we believe and everything we believe comes from this.

But, what do you believe?

Some people don't believe in anything. Well, that's just silly. Even more so considering that you searched google or bing and eventually found your way to this page. If you didn't believe in anything you wouldn't have searched for anything.

Some people believe in working hard, doing your best, and being a good person. Look: That's crushing. Grinding. Exhausting... It's also radically condescending. God's standards majestically transcend ours. And, His is perfection.

That's why we believe the Gospel.

Listen again:

- Jesus's perfect life... It's about His perfection not ours.  (Matthew 5.17).

- Jesus's substitutionary death... It isn't only His willingness to take all of our personal sin and guilt. It's also His willingness to credit His perfection to us (Colossians 1.22).

- Jesus's resurrection and reign... And so, it's never our power. But, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead - the proof of our sins being fully paid - is the same that empowers us to be changed into Christ's likeness. (Romans 8.11).

So, what do you believe? If you need the refreshment of hearing the Gospel again and again come visit us as soon as you can. If you still have questions about God and the Gospel, give us a call or send us an email, or ... ... ... come visit us as soon as you can.

Gatherings

Sunday morning, and Sunday evening worship gatherings are our opportunity to reflect on New Life through the Gospel and an opportunity to worship God as the Gospel has reconciled us to our Creator.

Worship Gathering Times:

Sunday morning at 10:00 and Sunday evening at 6:00

We gather every Sunday at 425 Fisk Avenue in DeKalb, IL.

Children's Worship

We provide a Children’s Worship Gathering as well as Nursery. The Nursery serves parents with children Newborn to 2 years for the entire duration of our worship gathering. The Children’s Worship is an optional worship time geared for children 3 years and up to go downstairs for worship in song and Bible time during the sermon portion of our main gathering. Children and families are encouraged to worship together in our main gathering.

What to Expect

Our worship gatherings are longer than most churches - usually 75-90 minutes - because we don't want to sacrifice time for good sermons and gospel-centered songs. Worship is sacrifice, not the other way around. Our order of service is focused on key facets of worship: Revelation, Adoration, Confession, Expiation (Forgiveness), Proclamation, Dedication, Supplication, and Commission.

What to Bring

Yourself, a friend, and a Bible. The Church in DeKalb uses the English Standard Version for preaching and teaching. Free copies of the ESV are available every service.

Community Groups

Community Groups meet weekly on many nights (and even a Friday morning) through the week.

Our community groups are designed to offer safe, authentic community and are the vehicle that our vision for The church in DeKalb is carried out through. Through our Community Groups we’re being reminded of the Gospel and being moved to worship, love, and mission.

Mission

Our third response to the Gospel is mission.

Mission

Our third response to the Gospel is mission.

Missional Triune God

Our God is a missional God. Jesus is the best example of this. The bible says that “The Word [Jesus] became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1.14). Jesus said His mission was, “to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19.10). Jesus’ mission  was to give us new life.

We want to be a church that brings people to new life through the Gospel.

Missional Community

The Church has been redeemed to be His people, and to demonstrate this by their love for one another. Being a missional community means reaching out to the world and reaching in to the members of the local church.

We want to be a church that becomes a community by the Gospel.

Missional Culture

The Church is also God’s vehicle to reveal His glory to the nations by announcing the Gospel. We do this both globally and locally. The heart of being missional means we find ways to participate in God revealing His glory through the Gospel to the people of our city. We see our workplaces, our coffee shops, and our grocery stores as a mission field as well as places of our daily activity.

We want to be a church that brings people to new life through the Gospel.

Church. Faith. Leadership.

Our Church:

The Church in DeKalb is a new church in DeKalb, IL birthed out of the desire to see both the people of DeKalb and the city itself transformed by the Gospel.

Our ambition is to receive what is beautiful here, and, in the power of the Gospel, to redeem and restore what is broken. The church in DeKalb is a confessional and missional church plant and a member of the Acts 29 Network, a trans-denominational peer to peer network of missional church planting churches.

A confessional church is one that is united around the truths of the Gospel, and articulates those truths in writing. We find ourselves in general agreement with the historic confessions like The Apostles Creed, The Second London Confession, and the Abstract of Principles.

A missional church is one that recognizes itself as God’s missionary people to those they live among. This means we do not see ourselves merely as those who send missionaries to other countries, but we see ourselves as missionaries in our own communities. As a missional church we are looking for ways to bless the city and the people of DeKalb and we are seeking to be an active part of God’s redemptive work here in our city.

Our vision is to be a church that brings people to new life through the preaching of the Gospel, to become a community by the Gospel, and to do life together for the Gospel.

Our Distinctives

We stand with the many other Acts 29 churches in our movement in the tradition of historic evangelical confessionalism. While every church has a unique philosophy of carrying out their ministry, we do - also stand - in our shared convictions on the following five theologically-driven core values:

- Gospel centrality in all of life.

- The sovereignty of God in saving sinners.

- The empowering presence of the Holy Spirit for all of life and ministry.

- The fundamental moral and spiritual equality of male and female as well as the principle
of male headship in the church and home.

- The local church as the primary means by which God chooses to establish his kingdom
on earth.

Our Faith:

Our statement of faith is based on Biblical Scripture and told through the Apostles Creed.

We believe in God, the Father Almighty,

    the Maker of heaven and earth,
    and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the virgin Mary,
    suffered under Pontius Pilate,
    was crucified, dead, and buried;

He descended into hell.

The third day He arose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven,
    and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
    from from there he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit;
    the holy catholic church;

    the communion of saints;
    the forgiveness of sins;
    the resurrection of the body;
    and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Our Leadership and Membership:

Leadership comes from membership. We believe that God has provided every gift and every talent through every person in our church (I Corinthians 1.7). Further, as a Gospel-Centered, church planting church we believe that within our church, and people who are coming to our church that aren't even here yet, God has prepared leaders that will be discovered and developed through The Church in DeKalb. Therefore, members play an integral role as our church.
